It’s a Family Affair!
Local 590 Fun Fact: Families that play together stay together is the old saying. But what about families who work together? Local 590 is privileged to have five intergenerational families among our membership.
Our mother / child pairs are Karen Lane and Sarah Bauman, Gail and David Johnson, Linda and Tom Laws, and Yvonne and Robert Harris.
The Tisdale family is a threesome with not just mother / child members, but dad is in the mix as well. Sheryl and John are the parents of Kelsey Tisdale.
Celebrate these lucky families and the good fortune of our union to count them as members!

2014 AFSCME CONVENTION
Submitted by: Nat Bender, Library Specialist, Cataloging & Metadata: Specialized Cataloging & Metadata Quality Management / Monographic Acquisitions

The theme of this year’s convention was “Bold, Brave and Determined.” There was a special focus on the challenges that unions are facing across the country, including the ongoing political struggles in Wisconsin.
A highlight of the convention was the announcement that AFSCME had nearly doubled its recruitment goal this year, adding 92,000 new members. In our day-to-day work at Local 590, it is easy to forget just how large an organization we are a part of. AFSCME has roughly 1.6 million members, working in very diverse roles and industries.
Hearing the stories of workers who have recently formed unions as well as those who are struggling to maintain their collective bargaining rights made me thankful for the work Local 590 has done.
If you are interested in learning more about the convention, click here > AFSCME Convention. The site has a full list of the resolutions and amendments that were passed, as well as videos, including a message to AFSCME workers from President Obama.
Other video highlights include speeches by AFSCME President Lee Saunders, AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Laura Reyes, and U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez.
